West End & Downton Abbey

My first stop was the lovely Glasgow Botanic Gardens, an easy bus transfer. But why don't they announce the stops (nor even have a electronic sign) like they did on the buses in Edinburgh? The stops themselves don't have their names on them, only numbers (I take it back, some of them do). I guess you have to be able to use your smartphone!

Next, on to the Kelvingrove Gallery which was a 20 minute walk in the West End though I got distracted by the fancy grocery store, the great little bookstore and the public library. And they had recycling bins for the public on the street, finally! I had lunch at the museum's cafe (lasagna, quite good, and Elderberry PressĂ©).

At Kelvingrove I found out that Niki de Saint Phalle did the upper decoration of the outside of GoMA!

  • Tympanum (1996)
This triangular mosaic, with its colorful symbols and figures inspired by the story of Saint Mungo, is on the exterior above GoMA's entrance. Saint Phalle also created a mirrored room within the building's entrance hall.
  • The Eric and Jean Cass Gift (2012): Through the Contemporary Art Society, Eric and Jean Cass donated 14 works by Saint Phalle to Glasgow Museums.
In 2012 the Casses donated 14 pieces by de Saint Phalle which greatly increased GoMA's collection of her work.
  This is about St Mungo

I liked the exhibit of French

artists and Scottish Colorists (4 male artists, 1930s), not sure I liked this exhibit (above) in one of the courtyards! It is called Floating Heads and is by Sophie Cave. Yeah, I found it a bit creepy, as this review says:

Last but not least, a big painting by Salvador Dali, "Christ of St John on the Cross" (1951):

So much to see but I was exhausted so I treated myself to the finale of Downton Abbey.  It was in a luxury theatre, Everyman in Princes Square, 4:30  show so 95% women, probably 95% retired, too!

It was good, and very comfortable,  drinks served beforehand, not during the movie.
