Stirling Castle

Today I went to the Stirling Castle. I could walk there and took the back walk around the cemetery.

Stirling Castle seen from the west in the 1660s by Johannes Vosterman

There was so much to see and absorb! I arrived about 10:15 and left at 2:30 (that includes a quick lunch in their cafe). I was told to see this Castle and skip the Edinburgh Castle and that seems right!

I liked the Stirling heads, seen here in a mirror.

I next went to the Stirling Smith Art Gallery, a mile away. The art collection was a bit small, photographs in the front and one room with art by the donation artist, Thomas Stuart Smith. They have a historical museum in the back that covers Stirling and Scotland.

Odd bits from the history section of the museum: world's oldest football. A milk bottle dedicated to Scottish poet Robbie Burns.

And a great dollhouse!

  1. Wow, that castle is on such a high plateau. Did you walk up that? I love how the milk carton is in a glass case with a violin and shot glass. The man shown in "The Pipe of Freedom" seems to have a nimbus above his head, like the painting of a saint. The placard you show indicates this was painted in the last year of the artist's life. I looked him up and Wikipedia reports that he founded the Stirling Smith Museum and Art gallery.
